Royalty payments -- trust, but verify
President Reagan was known to use the phrase "Trust, but Verify" in connection with nuclear arms reduction talks. The advisory board -- a sound alternative for private companies
Closely held companies, especially those whose owners are active in daily management, risk becoming too inwardly focused. They may lack the input and accountability for key decisions that investor owned companies derive from having professional investors and independent representatives on their board of directors. This risk can grow to unacceptable levels if the company has strategic objectives of rapid growth and eventual monetization of the company's value.
